Why I Don’t Offer a Client Closet (But Have Everything Covered for Your Newborn!)

As a newborn photographer, clients occasionally ask if I provide a women’s client closet or children’s wardrobe. While I understand how helpful that might seem, I choose not to include a full family wardrobe in my studio for several reasons. But don't worry—I still have you (and especially your little one!) covered. I also provide you with a guide to help you find your style with some helpful links as well!

First and foremost, personal style and comfort are incredibly important—each family has its own unique preferences and sizes, which a limited studio wardrobe might not accommodate. Additionally, the diversity in skin tones and hair colors means that certain shades and styles will suit some families more than others, making a one-size-fits-all approach impractical.

However, I know that the newborn stage involves sleepless nights and lots of adjustments. Rest assured, I am fully prepared to assist you, with a particular focus on your precious little one. Ultimately, my goal is to create a seamless and enjoyable experience for you and your family, capturing the tender and intimate moments with your newborn in a way that reflects your unique style and preferences.

Why Don't I Offer a Client Closet?

  1. Sizing is tricky! It's important that your clothes fit you well. Even if I stock a large selection, I won't have every size for every dress. Pinning or clipping a larger outfit doesn't look or fit as beautifully as something chosen for your shape and size.

  2. Everyone's style is unique (and that's great!). Your clothing choices reflect your personality and personal aesthetic. Maybe you love soft neutrals, or perhaps vibrant colors speak to you. Some prefer flowy dresses; others prefer fitted outfits or alternative pieces. Because style varies so widely, having every option that fits everyone's taste would be impossible.

But don’t forget, I’m here to help you narrow down your options or offer guidance to help you select outfits that photograph beautifully.

  1. Styles and trends constantly change. Fashion evolves from year to year, sometimes even season to season. While I can easily update my style guide (see link below!) with fresh clothing recommendations, updating a physical wardrobe would be costly and challenging.

  2. It keeps your costs down. By deciding not to invest in an extensive family wardrobe, I save resources and reduce overhead. That way, I can offer you more affordable photography services than photographers who maintain luxury client closets.

7 Tips for Styling Your Family's Studio Photoshoot

If you need outfit ideas for studio photos, here are some styling tips for you and your family:

Coordinate with Complementary Styles

Aim for coordinating colors and styles rather than identical outfits. Choose a color palette with complementary tones that work well together, such as soft neutrals, pastels, or earth tones. Coordinating classic colors will create a cohesive look without feeling too uniform (you don't want family members to blend together in your portraits).

Stick to Timeless Styles

Opt for classic clothing styles that won’t go out of fashion. Avoid trend-heavy pieces to ensure your family photos remain timeless no matter how many years have passed.

Avoid Busy Patterns

Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns to keep the focus on faces and expressions. Too many bold prints or stripes can distract from the overall image.

Choose Comfortable Fabrics

Ensure everyone wears clothing that feels good to move and sit in, especially children and Mama. Comfort translates to relaxed, natural smiles during the shoot.

Consider the Studio Background

Coordinate with me on the background colors or themes in the studio. Select clothing that complements rather than blends into the backdrop.

Accessorize Thoughtfully

Minimal accessories can add personality to outfits, but avoid oversized or overly bright items that might overpower your face and the photos. We want to focus on the sweet newborn details and family connections above all.

Plan for Footwear

Don’t overlook shoes—they’re often visible in family portraits! Choose footwear that fits the style of the outfit and looks polished. If we do a lifestyle newborn shoot at the studio, you could even go barefoot for a relaxed, cozy, homelike feel. Remember, these sessions are about capturing your family's essence and unique beauty. So, while these tips can guide you, the best outfit is one that makes you feel like yourself. And when you're happy and comfortable, it shines through in every shot.
